Digital preparation makes payments, transport and bookings easier, but visitor features change frequently. Download apps from official stores, complete verification before departure and retain alternatives that do not depend on one account.

There is no need to create a mainland China Apple account or install APK files from unknown sources. Both practices can complicate subscriptions, security and account recovery.

Payments and communication

Alipay and WeChat

Alipay and WeChat support certain international cards for QR payment at many businesses. Acceptance depends on the card, issuer, identity verification, transaction type and current rules.

Before travelling:

  1. Download the international versions from the official app store.
  2. Register with a number you can access during the trip.
  3. Complete any requested identification using details that match your passport.
  4. Add a supported card and review limits and charges in the app.
  5. Set a secure passcode and never share verification codes.

Do not make test transfers to strangers. A linked card may work for merchant purchases but not personal transfers or some mini programs. Carry cash and another card as backup.

WeChat is also used for messaging, bookings and mini programs. Some features require a Chinese interface or further verification.

Maps and urban transport

Amap (Gaode Maps) and Baidu Maps provide detailed public transport, directions and business listings. Their interfaces may be mainly in Chinese. Apple Maps uses local data in mainland China and may be more accessible for iPhone users.

Google Maps is not a reliable reference in mainland China: access may be restricted and some data or locations may be outdated. Save the hotel and destinations in Chinese characters.

DiDi provides ride-hailing and may be available as a standalone app or within Alipay and WeChat. Confirm the registration, exact pickup point, tolls and payment method. Availability varies by city.

Trains and bookings

Railway 12306 is the official rail channel and supports foreign traveller registration in certain versions. Trip.com provides an international interface as an intermediary and may charge service fees.

Tickets are released under current China Railway rules and demand rises around holidays. Check the sale date, exact station and passport details through the official channel; an incorrectly entered name can prevent access.

Translation

Download Simplified Chinese in an app with offline mode. Microsoft Translator, Apple Translate or other options in your official store can support communication. Availability of foreign services within China is not guaranteed.

Carry hotel and transport addresses in written Chinese. For allergies or medical needs, prepare a reviewed translation and do not rely only on camera translation.

Access to foreign services

Many international services are restricted in mainland China. Virtual private networks and other circumvention services are regulated and conditions change. Check applicable law, official travel advice and your provider's terms before deciding how to connect.
