Paying in another currency can involve several costs: a card fee, an exchange-rate markup and, when withdrawing cash, fees from both the card provider and the ATM owner. A suitable travel card can reduce these costs, but no card avoids every charge in every country or situation.
When a travel card is worthwhile
Travel cards are most useful when the payment currency differs from your account currency or when you need to manage several currencies. They may offer less value when you travel within your home currency area. In all cases, the card provider cannot control an ATM owner's fee or the exchange rate offered by a merchant through dynamic currency conversion.
Before choosing a card, check the total conversion cost, monthly allowances, weekend or other surcharges, cash-withdrawal rules, and the price of the plan or card. Products can differ by country of residence, and a benefit included with one plan may not be available with another.
Provider comparison
| Provider | Main advantages | Limitations and details to verify | May suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | Hold and convert several currencies; see the cost before confirming a conversion | Fee varies by currency; withdrawal allowances and card issue or delivery fees vary by market | People who receive, hold or spend several currencies |
| Revolut | Exchange and spend in several currencies; choice of plans | Allowances, surcharges and limits depend on plan, country, timing and usage; card or delivery costs may apply | People who value a multi-feature app and can monitor their limits |
| N26 | Euro account with card payments and app-based management | Purchases and withdrawals have different terms; price, benefits and availability vary by country and plan | Residents of supported markets who want a euro account for travel |
| Monzo | Everyday account and app, with international payments under the current terms | Limited geographic availability; cash, fair-use and plan rules vary by residence and plan | Customers in a supported market, especially existing Monzo users |
| CaixaBank | Spanish branch network and in-person support; integrates with an existing customer's banking | Conversion, withdrawal, account and linked-product terms vary by account, card and ATM | Customers in Spain who prefer to keep their banking in one place |
Use the table to shortlist providers, not as a substitute for their official fee schedules. Check the terms for your country of residence and plan immediately before applying and again before an important trip.
Simple exchange-cost example
This is a mathematical illustration, not the current price of any provider. If you spend the equivalent of EUR 2,000 in another currency, the cost attributable to a percentage fee would be:
| Assumption | Calculation | Conversion cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3% fee | EUR 2,000 x 3% | EUR 60 |
| 0.5% fee | EUR 2,000 x 0.5% | EUR 10 |
| No fee within an allowance | EUR 2,000 x 0% | EUR 0 while enough allowance remains |
The actual total may also include a plan subscription, exchange-rate markup, timing surcharge, withdrawal fee and ATM operator fee. Compare the final amount you will receive or pay, not just the advertised percentage.
Wise
Advantages. Wise can be useful for holding balances, receiving money and converting between several currencies. Before you confirm a conversion, it generally shows the exchange rate and fee separately, making the cost easier to compare.
Limitations and variation. It is not universally free: the fee depends on the currencies and type of transaction. Card availability, account details, features and cash terms vary by country of residence. Withdrawals commonly have an allowance based on value, number of transactions or both, after which charges may apply.
What to verify. Check the fee for the specific currency pair, ATM allowances and charges, and any card issue, replacement or delivery costs. It may suit people who receive, hold or spend several currencies and want to see the conversion cost before accepting it.
Revolut
Advantages. Revolut combines currency exchange, payments and card controls in one app. Its range of plans lets customers choose between a basic option and plans with additional features, where available in their market.
Limitations and variation. Exchange and cash allowances, surcharges and usage rules depend on the country, plan and, in some cases, the timing or volume of the transaction. Paying for a higher plan does not necessarily remove ATM operator fees or every restriction.
What to verify. Review the exchange allowance, out-of-market-hours or weekend terms, fair-use policy, included withdrawals, and card and delivery costs. It may suit occasional or frequent travelers who will use its features and monitor their limits in the app.
N26
Advantages. N26 provides an app-based euro account and can simplify travel spending, particularly for customers who already use euros. Its notifications and in-app controls help users track transactions.
Limitations and variation. Card purchases and cash withdrawals can have different terms. Benefits, subscriptions, available cards and supported countries depend on the market and plan; euro and non-euro withdrawals may also be treated differently.
What to verify. Confirm any foreign-currency purchase fee, the cost and number of withdrawals, ATM terms inside and outside the eurozone, and the plan subscription. It may suit residents of a supported country who want a euro account and make more card payments than cash withdrawals.
Monzo
Advantages. Monzo combines an everyday account with in-app controls and alerts. Existing customers may find that taking their usual account abroad makes budgeting and transaction tracking simpler.
Limitations and variation. Monzo is not available on the same terms in every country. Exchange rules, cash allowances, fair-use limits, subscriptions and features differ by residence and plan. A card issued in one market should not be assumed to have the terms offered in another.
What to verify. Check that you can open the account in your country, which exchange rate applies, withdrawal limits and fees, the plan cost, and any restrictions on overseas use. It may suit residents of a supported market, especially those who already use Monzo as their main account.
CaixaBank
Advantages. For customers in Spain, CaixaBank keeps travel payments and withdrawals within their existing banking relationship, with access to its app, branch network and support channels. This may appeal to people who prefer conventional bank support.
Limitations and variation. There is no single travel tariff for every CaixaBank card. Conversion fees, withdrawal terms, account charges and possible discounts depend on the account, card, linked products and ATM network. An overseas ATM owner may also add a fee.
What to verify. Identify the exact name of your card and check its currency-conversion fee, exchange-rate treatment, out-of-network withdrawal charge and any conditions for avoiding account or card fees. It may suit CaixaBank customers who value keeping their finances together, provided their specific terms are competitive for the planned trip.
How to withdraw cash for less
Before traveling, check the per-withdrawal limit, monthly limit, number of included transactions and the charge applied after each allowance. An allowance from your provider does not prevent the ATM owner from adding a separate fee.
At your destination, favor ATMs operated by established banks, but do not assume that an airport machine or a particular chain will be cheaper. Insert your card, select the amount and read every screen before confirming. If the machine displays an operator surcharge or offers to convert the amount to your home currency, you can cancel and try another ATM. Choose to be charged in the local currency and decline the ATM's conversion.
Making fewer, moderately larger withdrawals can reduce fixed fees, but avoid carrying more cash than you can store safely. Do not exhaust one card's cash allowance either: retain some capacity for emergencies and carry an alternative.
How to pay merchants
When a terminal asks, choose the local currency. If you select euros, pounds or another home currency, the merchant or its payment provider may use dynamic currency conversion at a less favorable rate. The option may be described as a “guaranteed amount” or accompanied by a claimed saving; check the currency rather than relying on the message.
Verify the amount before tapping or inserting the card, keep the receipt if something goes wrong and enable transaction alerts. Hotels, car-rental companies and unattended fuel stations may place a temporary hold on funds. Use a card with enough available balance or credit, and ask when the hold will be released.
Backups and resolving errors
Carry at least two cards, preferably from different issuers and payment networks, and keep them in separate places. Test the PINs before leaving, install and update the apps, and make sure you can receive security codes. A small cash reserve can cover transport or merchants that do not accept cards.
If a payment fails, do not retry it repeatedly without checking the app, as this could create several pending authorizations. Check the currency, balance, limits, security controls and whether the card is frozen. Then try chip and PIN, another card or another payment method. If an ATM retains the card or dispenses the wrong amount, keep the receipt, record the location and contact both the operator and your provider promptly.
For a transaction you do not recognize, freeze the card in the app if that feature is available and contact the issuer through an official channel. Never share one-time security codes or full card details with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
