Install the main apps before departure and complete any SMS verification. Coverage, payment methods and features vary by city, so keep alternatives available.

Transport

Grab and Bolt

Grab offers ride-hailing in Bangkok and many tourist destinations, alongside food and other services. Bolt operates in several cities, but coverage is not identical. Compare the estimated fare, pickup point, tolls and payment method at the time of travel.

An in-app fare does not remove every possible surcharge. Airports and regulated areas may have additional fees. Confirm the registration plate and driver's name before entering the vehicle.

Google Maps

It is useful for walking directions and for checking Bangkok's BTS, MRT, buses and boats, but schedules may not reflect disruption. Also consult operator maps and notices for BTS and MRT. Save your accommodation's name and address in Thai to show a driver.

Communication and translation

LINE is widely used for messaging, and some accommodation providers and businesses offer it as a contact channel. WhatsApp remains useful with international tour operators; no single app reaches everyone.

Google Translate supports downloaded Thai and camera translation. Results for dishes, allergies and addresses can be inaccurate. Carry a card written in Thai if an allergy or medical condition requires particular care.

Food and bookings

Wongnai contains restaurant listings and reviews, mainly in Thai. Google Maps can supplement a search and help with opening hours, although recent information should be verified.

Agoda, Booking and accommodation websites allow room comparisons. Review the final price, taxes, breakfast, cancellation terms and child policies; no platform is consistently the cheapest.

Money and organisation

A banking or budgeting app helps track withdrawals, conversions and daily spending. Before relying on a card inside Grab or another app, make sure it has been verified and keep cash for a journey if digital payment fails.

Local QR wallets are generally designed around Thai accounts or identification. Linking a foreign card to an app does not guarantee that every feature will be available.

  1. Install Grab and, where available, Bolt.
  2. Complete registration without placing an unnecessary test booking.
  3. Download offline maps and translation.
  4. Save the hotel, airport and a nearby clinic in Thai.
  5. Enable bank alerts and carry a backup card and cash.
