Revolut, Wise, and N26 support overseas payments and mobile account management, but they are not equivalent products and are not always prepaid cards. Features, fees, and availability depend on country of residence and subscription plan.
Main differences
| Service | Focus | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Revolut | Account with multiple plans, currency exchange, and extra services | Monthly limits, markups, withdrawals, and plan benefits |
| Wise | Multi-currency account with itemized conversion fees | Currency fee, withdrawal allowance, and card cost |
| N26 | Euro bank account for residents of supported markets | Plan terms, non-euro withdrawals, and availability |
An interbank or market rate does not necessarily mean zero cost. There may be a conversion fee, usage limit, ATM charge, or subscription. Use the fee schedule attached to your account rather than an old comparison.
Before traveling
- Activate the physical card and confirm its PIN.
- Check payment and withdrawal limits, increasing only what you need.
- Review supported currencies and the conversion process.
- Enable notifications and locate the freeze control.
- Save support details outside the phone.
- Carry another card, ideally on a different network.
Payments and withdrawals
Pay in local currency. If a terminal or ATM offers to convert the amount, compare that offer with your provider's conversion; declining it is often better. Before withdrawing, account for both your provider's fee and any ATM operator charge.
For hotels and rental cars, ask whether debit cards are accepted. Some suppliers require a credit card in the driver or guest's name for the deposit.
Security and safeguarding
Protection arrangements differ by product and country. Check which legal entity supplies the account, where it is regulated, and whether funds are treated as a bank deposit or safeguarded electronic money. That distinction matters if a provider fails.
Do not keep the entire travel budget in one account. Maintain emergency funds accessible through another route and avoid sensitive transactions on untrusted networks.
Choosing between them
Calculate the cost using your likely currencies, monthly spending, withdrawals, and subscription fee. Wise may suit regular currency conversion, Revolut packages a wider range of services and plans, and N26 functions as an everyday bank account in its markets. Combining one with a backup card can be sensible if account fees do not erase the benefit.
